We all have that day where we just want to drink something more than just your regular drink. A treat that contains ingredients that can momentarily fill you up and fuel your body for that much needed energy boost:  a go-to-beverage that is fast and easy to make. And that pick me up drink is the yummy smoothie. Although there are a lot of options available for purchase, we should stop and be vigilant on what we should take into our bodies. There are many smoothies that claim to be healthy because of the presence of fruit/s or vegetable/s but what we fail to look at is its other contents that may contain preservatives or tons of sugar that defeats the purpose of a healthy smoothie.

A typical unhealthy smoothie may contain one or more of the following ingredients. Ice cream, chocolate syrups or powders, sugar, store bought honey, pudding mixes, whipped cream or cream soda. Addition of the said examples above will add up as bad fats, which will make the smoothie unhealthy making it bad for your body. Smoothies are not hard to make, it is fast and easy and ingredients are readily available in the market. All you need is a good stock of ingredients and a blender then your good to go. If possible, it is best that you make your own smoothie version; in that way you control the portion and what you put in it. Healthy smoothies should start off with healthy bases such as fresh juice (freshly squeezed fruit juice), raw milk, almond milk or coconut milk, tea (contains cancer fighting catechins), fermented tea (kombucha, packed with probiotics), pomegranate juice (can relieve sore muscles), vanilla kefir (drinkable yogurt filled with calcium and healthy probiotics), and of course water. Other healthy ingredients you can incorporate into your smoothie are fresh or frozen fruit, fresh vegetables, yogurt, berries, cacao, aloe vera, herbs and spices, organic or pure honey, pure maple syrup, nuts and seeds (flax seeds, adds fiber and heart healthy omega 4 fats), coconut products, silken tofu (loaded with protein, which can make you feel full) , oatmeal and mineral supplements. Strawberry Mango Spring Smoothie Recipe

Makes 3½ cups

  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 banana, peeled, sliced, and frozen
  • 1 mango, skinned and chunked
  • 5 large strawberries, hulled

Combine ingredients in blender and blend until smooth.


Summer Stone Fruit Smoothie Recipe

Makes 2 cups

  • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 plum, pit removed, flesh roughly chopped
  • 1 peach, pit removed, flesh roughly chopped
  • 1 nectarine, pit removed, flesh roughly chopped
  • 1/2 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen

Combine ingredients in blender and blend until smooth.

Makes 3 cups

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 teaspoon agave syrup
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 apple, cored

Makes 3 cups

  • 1/4 cup carrot juice
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 1 cup roughly chopped kale, ribs removed
  • 4 small broccoli florets, sliced and frozen
  • 1 banana, peeled, sliced, and frozen
  • 1 apple, cored and roughly chopped

Combine ingredients in blender and blend until smooth.
