Whenever our nose feels stuffy we reach for that tissue and blow our noses as hard as possible to get some relief. While this gives us a temporary release this is a wrong practice and can be harmful.
Forcing the mucus out through blowing your nose may not do much in terms of clearing your nose; it might actually slow the process of draining it. It causes your vessels to break causing more stress and increase the chances to have a more serious problem. When you blow your nose too hard, the pressure inside the nasal cavity increases, which can drive the mucus into the sinus—meaning, it allows bacteria, viruses and irritants to enter your ears and sinuses.
If you feel that you really need to blow your noses, do it gently by pressing your right nostril close and breathing gently through the left. Repeat on the other side and continue when you feel it is necessary to do so. Another thing you can do which is not for everyone is to sniff or swallow or to sniff and spit.
Other ways to relieve your self is to try the following methods.
- Use the steam. The warm air that the steam gives can add humidity to your nose and open up your nasal passage; giving you relief and can break up congestion. You can either try to put your face in front of a container with hot water and let the steam do it’s magic. Another thing is to take that hot shower.
- Use some nasal spray. Nasal sprays can be bought over the counter. These sprays do not only give you relief it can also help treat inflammations and congestion. Although many nasal sprays can tend to be addictive it is important to remember not to use them too often and follow the instructions on the label.
- If the clogging in your nose is caused by allergies, take that pill. There are many over the counter allergy pills you can purchase allergy pills contains antihistamine components that dry up that nasty snot.
- If your nose is blocked due to a cold, you may take Lagundi. This herb has been found to have anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, antihistamine, and analgesic properties. The antihistamine activity can produce the anti-itching effect claimed in Ayurveda medicine of the herbal medicine (Dharmasiri et al, 2003). It also has muscle relaxant properties that help relieve respiratory problems.
Whatever causes your nose to clog up, it is essential to take note on what you should or should not do. Blowing our noses is something that is unavoidable; while it’s not in anyway prohibited, it is necessary to practice caution to avoid any possible complications.
