Good bacteria or what is called the probiotics, is a live bacteria and yeasts that is good for ones health specifically the digestive system.
When we say bacteria, we automatically tend to deem it as harmful for the body. Actually, bacteria can be either good or bad. Not everyone knows that some of the food we eat contains those good bacteria.

These bacteria are naturally found in our bodies and supplying more of them through consumption of foods that contains probiotics is beneficial. By increasing your consumption of foods that contain probiotics you can reap the benefits it can give to your health, which includes a stronger immune system, a good and improved digestion, increase in energy, healthier skin, reduces the risk of getting colds and flu, can heal inflammations and can inhibit weight loss.
There are different kinds of probiotics and it can be classified as the following:
- Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus bulgarius and Lactobacillus reuteri. This type of bacteria has many types of species although the most commonly used is the one called acidophilus. This type of bacteria lingers in the intestines, which helps the digestion process. It produces lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide, which helps keep bad bacteria out.
- Bifidobacterium. This bacteria can help reduce and repair stomach ulcers which are caused by Helicobacter Pylori.
- Streptococcus. This probiotic with the complete name of Streptococcus Thermophilus helps relief stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea and other gastrointestinal complications.
- Bacillus Coagulans. Used to treat gastrointestinal disorders, bowel diseases and irritable bowel syndrome. Often times comes in a form of a dietary supplement which can also be used to decrease the risk of getting respiratory infections.
Examples of foods that contains probiotics are as follows:
A fermented dairy that is similar to the popular yogurt, it is a combination of milk and fermented kefir grains with an acidic and tart taste and contains at least 10 to 34 strains of probiotics.
Such as sauerkraut, kimchi or in Filipino cuisine, atchara. The said food items have a similar taste which is sour, and because of this, it inhibits the growth of good bacteria. The fermented vegetables also contains enzymes that helps with digestion.
It is a traditional Japanese spice that is found in many Japanese recipes. The miso is fermented soybean, barley or brown rice with Koji (fungus).
The most popular food item that contains probiotics. Made from the milk of cows, goats or sheep, yogurt should not be pasteurized.

A small portion everyday can give you probiotics and can help control blood pressure, cholesterol levels, diabetes and can help you with your weight loss goals.
A fermented black tea which originated in Japan. Consuming it can help with your digestion, give you more energy and detoxify the liver.
Cheese is high in probiotics, just make sure that it is raw and unpasteurized.

A dish from Japan that consists of fermented soybeans. Natto contains probiotic bacillus subtilis that boosts ones immune system and support the cardiovascular health as well as aid in digestion.
