Lungs are for more than just breathing. Keep in mind that lungs regulate our blood pressure and filter small blood clots and remove small air embolisms.

These twin organs located in our chest; right below the rib cage on either side of the heart help maintain pH balance. They can detect an increase of acidity in the body when caused by a rise in carbon dioxide levels.

 

Our lungs protect our heart by absorbing some of the shocks that targets our hearts when our bodies encounter certain types of collisions. Apart from our heart, they also protect us from infection because some of the lungs’ membranes secrete a substance known as immunoglobulin A.

 

And of course, they’re a great help in our ability to speak, because without airflow, we would really be at a loss for words – literally. So it is natural to take care of our lungs for healthy function. There are numerous supplements to benefit our respiratory health and they can be found right in our kitchen supplies.

 

CARROTS

They’re not only good for our eyes, but also beneficial for our lungs. The beta-carotene converts into vitamin A that will help prevent various respiratory diseases. They’re also rich in vitamin C, and lycopene, all antioxidants that help us maintain our overall health.

 

APPLES

They’re rich in flavonoids, vitamin E, and vitamin C, all help the lungs function at their best. Apples contain high levels of an antioxidant flavonoid called quercetin which important in protecting the lungs from the harmful effects of atmospheric pollutants and cigarette smoke.

 

 

PUMPKIN/SQUASH

Another food rich in beta carotene and vitamin C, like carrots. It also contains high amount of potassium, panthothenic, magnesium, vitamin E. Pumpkin/squash has numerous health benefits to help protect our lungs. It is packed with nearly 20 percent of the recommended amount of daily vitamin C, which may help us recover from colds faster. The high amount of carotenoids in pumpkins /squash help lower lung cancer risk.

 

RED BELL PEPPER

These mild peppers are rich in vitamin C and the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin. Carotenoids as mentioned above have been shown to cut the risks of developing lung cancer.

 

GINGER

Also known as healing root helps to break down mucus, making it easier for your body to expel air. Not only is this spice anti-inflammatory, it is detoxifying and promotes the elimination of pollutants from the lungs. Ginger molecules may eliminate air pollutants out of air passages, relieve congestion, and improve circulation to the lungs, boosting lung health.
