Understanding Hepatitis

More often than we like, we hear the disease hepatitis. Unfortunately, not everyone grasps the severity of this common ailment. Understanding its meaning, what it can do to ones body and its classification is essential for us to be aware that it is not something that although common should be dismissed as simple.

 

Hepatitis, is defined as an inflammation of the liver. When unchecked and untreated it can lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis or even liver cancer. The hepatitis virus is the most common cause of hepatitis. Hepatitis has 5 different types namely hepatitis A, B,C,D and E. Hepatitis A and E are caused by the ingestion of food or water that has been contaminated. People that are exposed to areas that are not sanitized or those living with poor sanitation are most likely to have this type. Hepatitis B,C and D are caused by contact with infected bodily fluids. Common transmissions are through sexual intercourse, mothers through infants during the time of birth, blood transfusions and contaminated injections just to name a few. Hepatitis B and C can also lead to chronic diseases as well.

 

Acute hepatitis signs includes fatigue, flu like symptoms, dark urine, pale stool, abdominal pain, unexpected weight loss, loss of appetite and yellow skin and eyes.

When a person has hepatitis that are chronic, symptoms are rarely seen, symptoms will only appear when the liver function is damaged, that is why it is important to be vigilant when it comes to hepatitis. Variety is also the key to keep you body healthy at the same time motivate you to continue the journey. Also, limit or try to avoid consuming saturated fats, sugary treats, salty foods, processed foods and alcohol. If you are a hepatitis patient avoid raw foods that could contain viruses and bacteria. Taking supplements such as iron, vitamin A, B3, C and D can also help. And of course, no one is exempt from exercise. Allowing yourself even the simplest form of exercise daily, will do wonders for yourself as well as your bodily functions.

Finding the right option is important since treatments and therapy can have its corresponding side effects.

When it comes to treating hepatitis, there is no short cut and easy method , although treatments vary depending on the type. For Hepatitis A and E, there is no therapy for this but you may take a vaccine especially if you have liver disease. Prevention is the best treatment for this type. Hepatitis B, for patients with this type a small amount can be cured by injection for a period of six months, liver disease patients take virus suppression medications. Just like with hepatitis A, it is best to prevent it by taking a vaccine. Hepatitis C and D therapy consist of a drug combination via injection and orally. Treatments can be in the form of chemotherapy.

 

Finding the right option is important since treatments and therapy can have its corresponding side effects. End stage Hepatitis can also result in a liver transplant. For a patient to be qualify for a liver transplant, the process is tedious and there may be a wait time depending on the availability of a liver donor or how far you are in the line of patients.

Do not opt for the treatments, be vigilant and keep up to date with your vaccines. Talk to your doctor as soon as possible. Do not wait to fall victim to any of this types.
