(Updated) We all look for natural ways to look good and stay healthy. Besides, looking your best doesn’t have to be expensive or unnatural. In fact, you don’t have to look that far as some of them are in the pantry. Did you know that one of the most sought after fruits in the kitchen like lemon has been proven to have many uses that can benefit the body and the skin?

Lemon (Citrus limon (L.) Burm.) a yellow or pale yellow prolate fruit with five to 10 seeds, botanically a berry, is known throughout the world, and is used in numerous foodways and cuisines. The juice of the fruit is commonly used as a food ingredient in both commercial and home recipes, and is valued for its tart, tangy, and fresh character. The exceptionally fragrant rind is used as a garnish and flavoring and is a major source of commercial essential oil and aroma compounds. [R. Goodrich, in Encyclopedia of Food Sciences and Nutrition (Second Edition), 2003]

Lemons are a great source of minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium, which improve the appearance and condition of our hair, skin and nails. This fruit also contains Vitamin C, a great antioxidant for neutralizing free radicals and boosting collagen production.

  1. Lemon helps lighten and fade age spots. Applying a sliced lemon straight on the areas you would like to be improved on before bed time and washing it off in the morning with cold water. If you want to use it for your whole body, just add the ½ cup of lemon juice to your bath and soak in it for at least 20 minutes. Then, rinse off.
  2. To make your skin brighter, fade dark areas and have softer skin, rubbing lemon juice on a specific part can help you achieve it. Since Lemons are rich in Vitamin C and citric acid, using lemons can brighten and whiten your skin the more you use it.
  3. Lemons’ antibacterial and antifungal properties make them a natural alternative to treat acne and remove blackheads and heal acne.  Just slice the lemon, rub directly on the affected area. Do it every night and rinse with cool water in the morning. Repeat the process until your blackheads and acne disappear.
  4. Lemon can be a natural skin moisturizer. Mix equal parts of honey, lemon and olive oil. Apply on the dry areas of your skin and let it dry for 10 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.
  5. Lemon can also be an effective skin exfoliator. Rub a sliced lemon dipped into a half teaspoon of sugar on your skin. Do this at least once a week. This can help remove dead skin and give you a more refreshed feeling.
  6. A lemon anti wrinkle mask. Mix a teaspoon of honey, a few drops of lemon juice and a drop of almond oil. Apply on your face and dry it out for 20 minutes before washing off. Although if you have sensitive skin, dilute the lemon juice with water.
  7. Lemon can be used as a skin astringent as it helps motivate your pores to close and your face to tighten resulting to smoother skin.
  8. What about lemon cleansing wipes? Mix a couple of drops of lemon juice, tea tree oil d 6 ounces of distilled water. Use it with a cotton ball and wipe the area you would like to clean.

Lemon juice, natural cosmetics

There are so many benefits of lemon for your skin.  They’re also easy to use –– can be simply integrated in to your daily regime.  You can start your day with a glass of lemon water to wake up your digestive system and increase your energy by flushing out toxins and hydrating your whole body.

Similar to other natural alternatives, be cautious and try it out on a small part of your skin before doing it on larger areas.  You may never know how one’s skin can react even on the most natural ways. If there is no allergic reactions whatsoever, then good for you and better for your skin. Otherwise, it is safer to discuss with your dermatologist, especially if you have sensitive skin type.
